Emory Radiology has strong presence at virtual 2020 rsna annual meeting

by Mohsina Yusuf
For radiologists, the days after Thanksgiving are one of their favorite times of year. No, we’re not talking about Black Friday or Cyber Monday—though everyone does look forward to that, too.

The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) hosts its annual meeting in Chicago starting the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It's the largest radiology conference, as radiologists from all over the world gather at the McCormick Center to share their findings, guidance, presentations, and more.

This year, however, was a little different. The 106th RSNA Annual Meeting was held virtually due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Radiology faculty and staff around the world all expressed on social media how much they missed being in Chicago for this year’s meeting, but everyone still made the best of it and RSNA was just as exciting and robust. While there were fewer presentations overall this year, Emory Radiology still had more than 20 presentations (including exhibits and posters) and swept up the awards.

Dr. Kay Vydareny was one of three RSNA Gold Medal recipients, which is RSNA’s highest honor. It’s awarded ever year by the Board of Directors to individuals who contributed unusual service to the science of radiology. Dr. Vydareny is an Emory Radiology alumna and Emeritus faculty member who devoted her career to advancing medical education and mentoring medical students and radiology residents. She was the associate director of the Emory Radiology Residency Program before becoming the director of Medical Student Education for the Emory School of Medicine. Dr. Vydareny retired from clinical practice in 2010.

Dr. Mark Mullins was awarded the 2020 Outstanding Educator Award. This award is given to pioneers who have made significant contributions to radiologic education over the last 15 years.

Drs. Hernan Bello and Omar Kallas received educational exhibit awards, Dr. Domnique Newallo received a Quality Improvement Award, and Drs. Nima Kokabi and Brent Weinberg received Research Scholar Grants.

Jed Kendall received a research trainee prize award for his abstract, "
Fluciclovine Detection of Primary Prostate Cancer at the Sextant Level and Correlation of SUVmax with Gleason Grades."
Emory Radiology also had six RSNA presentations that were selected for publication in Radiographics this year:
  • Imaging Manifestations of Pulmonary Trauma: Brittany Lewis, MD; Scott Hamlin, MD; John O’Keefe, MD; Keith D. Herr, MD; Tarek N. Hanna, MD
  • Case-Based Approach to Entites Involving the Pancreaticoduodenal Region: Hernan Bello, MD; Aarti Sekhar, MD; Amir Davarpanah, MD
