Emory Radiology's Wellness committee strives to prevent burnout
by Mohsina Yusuf
Burnout is long-term job-related stress characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of sense of personal accomplishment. It is highly prevalent in health care workers and is associated with poor patient outcomes. Emory Radiology is doing its part to improve well-being and prevent burnout.
The Emory Radiology Wellness Committee is on a mission to make 2020 our best year yet for our large department. A healthcare professional’s well-being must be maintained in order for effective caregiving, and that’s where the committee steps in by providing the tools, resources, and culture needed to enhance well-being.
A department-level Wellness Committee has been organized to achieve the following:
One of the first initiatives of 2020 included a Wellness Retreat for our Emory Radiology residents. They all gathered at the Druid Hills Golf Club on Thursday, January 16 for a buffet-style lunch and afternoon jam-packed with activities.
Dr. Rebecca Seidel started the retreat with a welcome address and overview of our Wellness Committee. Residents Neena Davisson, Omar Kallas, and My-Linh Nguyen took the floor next to inform their fellow trainees of all the upcoming resident wellness events. After lunch, Dr. Sarah Milla gave an informative presentation on resilience and overcoming obstacles. The rest of the afternoon included team building activities and a group physical activity.

A department-level Wellness Committee has been organized to achieve the following:
- Develop a definition of well-being that fits the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences;
- Conduct an assessment of the current state of well-being among faculty, trainees, and staff to establish a baseline, set targets/goals for improving and enhancing personal well-being, and measure progress; and
- Develop a plan to create a culture of wellness across the department.

The first week of February was “Winter Doldrums Week 2020.” Throughout the week, the residents had several events planned to foster camaraderie, community and wellness including a cycling class at Vibe Ride, food drive for the Atlanta Community Food Bank and a social. This was done in conjunction with other radiology programs across the country including Vanderbilt, University of Alabama, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and shared through a fun social media campaign (#RadResCamaRADerie).
