hail to the chief residents
By Sam Marie Engle
The Class of 2022 chief residents have shattered the proverbial glass ceiling, making real the promises of the department's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The three doctors share a vision for providing outstanding patient care while championing the concerns and needs of the residents in the Diagnostic Radiology and the Interventional Radiology-Diagnostic Radiology Integrated Residency programs. They also share a commitment to one another, both as colleagues and as close friends.
We spent a few moments with the chief residents after one of their first administrative meetings to find out what their place in the history of the department means to them.

Dr. Shenise Gilyard
Diagnostic Radiology Chief Resident
It is a tremendous honor to serve as chief resident this year. I am the first African American chief resident in this program’s history as well as member of the first all-female chief class. With these two intersecting identities, I am challenged to ensure that I amplify the voices of patients, residents, and medical students to the best of my abilities. Although I am the first, I am confident that many more are to come.
Dr. My-Linh Nguyen
Diagnostic Radiology Chief Resident
It’s especially meaningful that all three chief residents are women, and two of us are women of color. We each bring a different perspective and will continue working as a team to ensure that all voices are heard across the residency and the department.
Dr. Julie Cronan
Interventional Radiology-Diagnostic Radiology Integrated Chief Resident
While I am proud to be a part of the first all-female class of chiefs in our department, my hope for our legacy as chiefs is a commitment to effectively advocating for each of our patients and our residents.
Leadership is serious business, and these doctors are serious about their responsibilities as leaders and mentors, but like the best leaders, they also bring joy and laughter to their work. Hail to the chiefs.
