letter from the chair - February 2021
Dear Colleagues,
With the cases of COVID-19 in the US continuing to decline, I cautiously breathe a sigh of relief and start to re-engage with friends and family. COVID-19 is not gone but with medicine and science on our side, effective vaccines, public health measures, and great healthcare delivery, we are finally truly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. That said, South America, India, Nepal, and other global hot spots are still very much in the danger zone. Our return to “normal” will be different from pre-2020 life and work. That is why I have empowered an Emory Radiology Post-COVID Innovation Task Force, co-led by Drs. Krupinski and Heilbrun, to guide us in going forward informed by the many adaptive lessons of the past 15 months.
This issue of Rad Report demonstrates the accomplishments and resilience of our Emory colleagues. From awards and honors to the impact of “rachhing,” our trainees, staff, and faculty continue to pursue new and better approaches to teaching, health care delivery (in Atlanta and throughout the world), and continuous innovation. The new PET-MR scanner and the progress of HSRB-II (future home of phase II of the Emory Center for Systems Imaging) are especially exciting. Earlier this month the leading medical journal Lancet published the results of a prostate cancer imaging trial led by Dr. David Schuster which relied on the Emory-developed radiotracer 18F-fluciclovine.
As always, we embrace and celebrate our diversity. May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time both for noting the many contributions of this intrinsically highly diverse identity and for fighting the recently escalated blatant ignorance and violence against AAPI persons.
Thank you for all you do, and please stay safe and well.
Best,
Carolyn
