letter from the INTERIM chair - June 2022
Dear Colleagues,
This season brings with it bittersweet endings and new beginnings. We graduated the 13th class of Radiology Leadership Academy. The three teams of faculty and staff leaders presented projects that were important, timely, and practical. The number of diplomas, certificates and awards distributed to the graduates of our undergraduate Medical Imaging Program as well as our residency and fellowship programs were reminders of the importance and success of our educational mission. It amazes me each year to witness the growth and accomplishment that occurs over the course of these programs.
And just like that, July 1st marks a new beginning with dozens of new trainees joining the Emory family.
This issue of Rad Report introduces new faces and honors the diversity that is Emory Radiology. It celebrates great accomplishments in resident-led innovation, a successful transition to Sectra PACS, and Emory Healthcare being named a Comprehensive Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center of Excellence, thanks in large part to our Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. The issue also explores the potential dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reinforcing race-based disparities.
Even with all the celebrations and tremendous accomplishments of our people, I know this is a challenging and uncertain time for everyone. I have been in the role of Interim Chair for the department for six months now. While we have persevered and continued to make progress during this time, there have been faculty and staff departures, and new challenges from the resurgence of COVID, supply chain disruptions, and financial struggles across the health-care industry. The Chair of Radiology and Imaging Sciences search has progressed and is scheduled to wrap up over this summer. Irrespective of the outcome, I know the department will be well-positioned to enter its next chapter, primarily because of the strength of the wonderful people in this department. I am so grateful for this opportunity to work with and lead this team!
Best,
Amit
