Getting to know karen bell-moore
by Mohsina Yusuf
Karen Bell-Moore’s career at Emory began almost 20 years ago when she was hired as an interventional technologist for Emory Radiology. She later was promoted to interventional supervisor. Today, she is the radiology manager at Emory University Hospital, a position she’s held since July 2018.
Karen is an accomplished individual. She joined the Air Force as an E2 Airman at 18-years-old and rose to a sergeant rank before leaving the Air Force. She earned her MBA from Shorter University, but she’s no stranger to the medical and healthcare professions. She knew ever since high school she wanted to get involved either through dental, radiology, or pharmacy. She was a pharmacy technician for nine years and knew she wanted to go into radiology once she left the Air Force.
As the radiology manager for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, she is involved with leadership team check-ins, morning huddles, and staff rounding. She’s also a member of the department’s Value Stream project and the LEAN journey. One of her favorite parts of lean and communication is seeing our staff getting engaged and seeing how the transformation is going with it.
You can often find Karen heavily involved in giving back to the community when she’s not working. Some of her favorite community service projects include feeding the homeless and playing bingo with nursing home tenants.
For Karen, staying positive is always the goal. “Today is a new day and new beginning,” she says. “No matter how I feel, I try to radiate positivity. If I see someone frowning or having a bad day, I’ll go over and talk to them.”
