Emory Radiology’s First Education Retreat
by Mohsina Yusuf
On Tuesday, February 25, the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences held its first radiology education leadership retreat at the Emory University Robert W. Woodruff Library.
The goal of this all-day event for the education team was to set a vision and mission that aligns with the School of Medicine and the radiology department by coming up with strategic priorities specific to radiology education.
A committee consisting of Dr. Mark Mullins, Deb Smith, Dr. Erin Grady, Felicia Mobley, and Carol Dowdle started planning in June 2019. When Amy Fioramonte joined the education team in August, a primary focus was to make the retreat happen.
Radiology faculty and staff who are heavily involved with the education mission were invited to attend the retreat, which was jam-packed with presentations and brainstorming sessions. The retreat started off with a keynote on medical education trends by Dr. Linda Lewin from the Emory Department of Pediatrics followed by an update from Dr. Mullins, vice chair for education, on the current state of radiology education at Emory University.
Dr. Joanna Fair from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine spoke on delivering effective feedback as the second keynote presentation of the day. After lunch, attendees broke up into groups to start developing educational mission and vision statements followed by a SWOT analysis on strategic planning. The retreat ended with establishing strategic priorities in the following areas: people, standardization, organizational design, and innovation.
